Hosted by Labour Rights Investor Network (LRIN) | Understanding and Acting on Labour Rights Risks in the Platform Economy at a Moment of Opportunity

08:00 - 09:30
Venue: Room 103, Anhembi Convention Centre, São Paulo
Audience: This is for PRI in Person delegates. To enquire about any exceptions, please contact the organiser.

The Global Unions’ Committee on Workers’ Capital (CWC) invites PRI in Person participants to a breakfast session on the Labour Rights Investor Network (LRIN)

Freedom of association and collective bargaining are universal labour rights. Yet the majority of the 150 million people working via online platforms are treated as self-employed or classified as independent contractors, which restricts their ability to join a union and excludes them from minimum-wage guarantees, paid leave and other social protections in many jurisdictions.

When platform business models are misaligned with international labour standards, investors may face material operational, legal, regulatory and reputational risks that pose distinct stewardship challenges.

This session will explain why labour rights in the platform economy matter for PRI signatories and how they may approach stewardship. Investors will hear directly from workers, unions and peers, and explore engagement strategies to mitigate risk.

You’ll leave with:
  • Guidance on mitigating material risk by strengthening labour-rights stewardship with a focus on Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining
  • Real-world examples of labour-rights risks and engagement opportunities
  • Concrete stewardship tools and investor asks for platform companies

Hosted by the Labour Rights Investor Network (LRIN), this session will show how access to labour-rights expertise and a collaboration platform can strengthen PRI signatories’ stewardship.

Speakers:
  • Kiran Aziz, Head of Responsible Investments at KLP, Norway
  • Christoffer Jonsson, CWC Chair and CEO of Folksam LO Tjänstepension, Sweden
  • Marcelo Pariente, General Secretary of ASIMM – Asociación Sindical de Motociclistas, Mensajeros y Servicios – an ITF-affiliated trade union, Argentina
  • Nicolas Souza Santos, iFood Delivery Rider; Secretary of the Association of Motoboys, Motogirls, and Couriers of Juiz de Fora (AMMEJUF); and member of the National Alliance of App-Based Couriers (ANEA), Brazil
  • Paddy Crumlin, CWC Vice-Chair, President of the International Transport Workers Federation and National Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA), Australia

Emerging Markets and Developing Economies (EMDEs) are tomorrow’s engines of global growth—projected to account for over half of global energy demand and emissions by 2050. Considering their promise and urgent need to decarbonise, institutional investors are keen to scale climate investments in EMDEs.

Building on those outcomes, this São Paulo workshop will move from strategy to action, focusing on concrete investment pipelines, blended-finance models, and partnership structures that can unlock institutional capital at scale.
